The complex composed by the hermitage or Rotunda of Montesiepi and by the ruins of the great Abbey of Circestense of St. Galgano is one of the most suggestive that are found in Tuscany.
In the Rotunda of Montesiepi it is found, nailed in in the rock, the Sword of St. Galgano.
Built among 1182 and 1185, above to the hut on the hill where St. Galgano lived Your last year of life and really there where you/he/she had plunged Your Sword in the rock, the Rotunda of Montesiepi was originally the Grave of the Saint, that was buried to north of the sword as to see, through the door of entry, Chiusdino. Only in 1220 (or 1218?) the construction of the great Abbey was initiated to valley. The jobs of construction last up to 1268, when you/he/she was officially consecrated by the Bishop of Volterra Alberto Solariums. Then one hundred years of great shine up to 1364 to which it followed the slow decadence given by the unfortunate practice of the he/she Commends. A fact above every other: in 1550 the Commendatario Girolamo Calves it came to sell (after the jewels and who knows thing other) the roof in lead. Despite some attempts to restore the convent at the end in 1789, after the Rotunda of Montesiepi was elevated to Parish, the great abbey you/he/she was desecrated and definitely left to the downfall.
While the Rotunda of Montesiepi brings us, with its Sword in the Rock, to the saga of King Artu, the great Abbey reserves us, with its Sacred Geometry, other surprises both "musical" and is "Egyptian" and is on the Saint Graal.
